Secure data erasure is essential, but understanding the actual condition of a device is just as critical. That’s why we’re proud to introduce Diagnostics as a new feature within our software for both computers and mobile devices. With our Diagnostics feature, organizations can assess, document, and report on the functional condition of devices before reuse, resale, or recycling, all within the same trusted Certus environment.

Diagnostics for Computers

Our Diagnostics feature for computers (PC's, laptops, etc.) helps users determine and document the functional status of key hardware components by running a structured set of tests. This allows organizations like ITADs, refurbishers, and resellers to quickly understand a device’s condition and make informed decisions about its next destination.

The current release includes 13 diagnostic tests, covering essential hardware components such as battery performance, system startup, cooling, input devices, memory, audio, display, keyboards and integrated peripherals like microphones and webcams.

Each test is designed to produce clear, verifiable results that can be trusted for both operational and commercial purposes.

Diagnostics for Mobile Devices

For mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.), Diagnostics enables users to assess the functional state of both hardware and software, as well as the visual condition of the device. The feature supports devices running Android 8 or later and iOS 13 or later.

The Diagnostics module includes 43 tests, combining unattended and attended checks to ensure a thorough and reliable assessment. This also includes checks for locked states such as MDM, SIM lock, cloud lock, carrier lock, and Find My. To support this functionality, the application interface is organized into two clear tabs: Erasure and Diagnostics.

The current Erase button has been enhanced into a multi-action button that adapts to context, allowing users to erase data, run diagnostics, or switch between workflows with ease.

A Consistent Diagnostic Workflow

Diagnostics for both computers and mobile devices follow the same structured and consistent workflow. Each diagnostic test is built around three clear steps:

• Evidence collection: Device data is collected either automatically from the system or through controlled, guided tests performed during the diagnostics process.
• Result interpretation: Test results are translated into a functional status, which may be done automatically or with user verification when necessary.
• Reporting: All outcomes are consolidated into a Diagnostics Report, providing a clear, standardized overview of the device’s condition.

This approach ensures consistency, traceability, and reliability across all tested devices.

Flexible Configuration and Centralized Reporting

Diagnostics can be configured directly within our software through a dedicated Diagnostics section in the Settings menu. Users can select which tests are executed, define test sequences, and adjust parameters per device type. Attended tests are completed manually via the application running on the device, while unattended tests are executed automatically where possible.

After the diagnostics are finished, a standard Diagnostics Report is created and saved in the Manage Reports window, along with erasure reports. This keeps all documents, including erasure, functional, and optical condition data, in one organized and easy-to-access place.

Transparent Reporting and Asset Grading

Diagnostics provides transparent reporting to the owner of the devices by documenting not only certified data erasure, but also the functional and optical condition of each device. This creates a clear and objective basis for valuing individual assets.

Based on diagnostics results, users can define and apply asset grading within our software. This is especially important for ITADs, as settlements with suppliers are often based on the assigned grade of used devices. Standardized grading enables fair and transparent compensation.

Grading also supports smarter next-step decisions. For example, A-grade devices can be directed toward high-value resale, B-grade devices toward B2B sales, while C-grade devices can be evaluated for repair, parts reuse, or mix-and-match refurbishment when economically viable.
